St. Joseph’s Church in Nawiady

Information

The village of Nawiady was founded by the Teutonic Order Knights in 1397 as a bee-keeping settlement. Church chronicles state that the first church was built on the highest hill in 1437. In 1600–1603 it was rebuilt, and in 1687 a wooden tower was erected. It houses a historic altar from the 17th century with paintings and woodcarving pieces. In the central part of the altar there is a statue of the Mother of God holding Jesus in her arms and surrounded by the light of holiness. You should pay close attention to the side walls of the altar with paintings depicting the four Evangelists: Matthew with an angel, Mark with a lion, Luke with an ox and John with an eagle. To the right of the altar you can see a baptismal angel holding a galvanized bowl from 1700. A stone memorial for the victims of World War I was placed in front of the temple. The church was taken over by Catholics in 1981.
