Old Believers' Monastery in Wojnowo

Information

The history of Masurian Old Believers is associated with the monastery in Wojnowo. Its origins date back to 1836, when Lavrentiy Rastropin founded a small hermitage on Lake Duś. In 1847, a male monastery was established in its place, and in 1885 –– a female one. After the turmoil of wars only several nuns lived there. In 1968, Leon Ludwikowski became the owner of the facility and he took care of the elderly nuns.

Currently, the monastery buildings are the property of his heirs. The monastery is open to visitors, and the owners run an agritouristic farm there. The most interesting building there is molennaya –– a house of prayer. Inside, in the prayer part, there is a collection of liturgical books and icons. The most interesting one is the nearly 500-year-old icon depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child. A 3.5 meter silver plated chandelier from 1910 is worth your attention as well.
