TRAIL COURSE: Łuknajno – Dziubiele – Suchy Róg – Okartowo – Nowe Guty – Kwik – Zdory – Jedlin – Karwik – Niedźwiedzi Róg – Wejsuny – Wierzba – Mikołajki – Łuknajno
ON THE ROUTE:
- The route leads in forest areas and open agricultural lands, along asphalt and dirt roads, sometimes sandy and rocky. In two places you need to take the national road no. 16 (approx. 3 km) and the voivodeship road no. 63 (approx. 2.5 km). The ferry crossing in Wierzba is available from June to September only.
The trail leads around Lake Śniardwy, the biggest lake in Poland called “the Masurian Sea” with an area of over 113.4 km2. It is located on the route of the Great Masurian Lakes, in the basin of the Pisa River. The route crosses the Polish horse breeding area. When on the route, you can see a free-walking herd. We recommend leaving the route for a while and visiting the Research Station of the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Popielno and its museum of natural history. Near the trail and the village of Łuknajno there is a Lake Łuknajno natural reserve that was established in 1947 to protect the population of wetland birds. In 1976, it was entered on the list of UNESCO biosphere reserves, and in 2017 it was enlarged and given a changed name of the “Masurian Lakes” MAB Biosphere Reserve.
